History of the R107

The R107 SL-Class emerged as Mercedes-Benz's vision of the ultimate grand touring sports car, replacing the iconic W113 pagoda-top model.

The 350SL launched in 1971 with a 3.5-liter V8, establishing the modern SL design language with its distinctive long hood and compact cabin. The hardtop convertible concept proved revolutionary, offering weather protection while maintaining open-air motoring enjoyment.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the R107 received multiple engine upgrades, including the 450SL, 380SL, and ultimately the powerful 560SL with 227 horsepower. These updates ensured the model remained competitive and desirable across changing market conditions and emissions regulations.

Production continued for 18 years with over 237,000 units built, making it one of Mercedes-Benz's most successful models. The R107's longevity demonstrated the timeless appeal of its design and the brand's commitment to quality and innovation.
